Sandicliffe Motor Contracts are offering fleet managers and organisations free consultative advice on how your existing fleet and vehicle policy could be affected by future clean air strategy plans.

Last summer, the Department for Environment Food & Rural Services (DEFRA) led by Rt Hon Michael Gove MP published plans for reducing roadside nitrogen dioxide concentrations in the UK and set out an approach to meet statutory limits for NO2.

In their draft for a Clean Air Strategy, they outlined their ambitions which related to reducing air pollution to make our air healthier to breathe, protecting nature and boosting the economy.

Within their draft strategy, they set a clear direction for future air quality policies and goals. The strategy is positioned alongside three other important UK government strategies: Industrial Strategy, Clean Growth Strategy and a 25 Year Environment Plan, of which full details can be downloaded or viewed here.

The Strategy

The strategy includes ending the sale of new conventional petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2040 and tackling the growing problem of Nitrogen Oxides (NOX) created by road transport which accounts for 34% of the problem. Their target is to reduce emissions against the 2005 baseline by 55% by 2020, increasing to 73% by 2030, which would require significant planning investment and changes to the ways in which councils plan traffic management.

As part of their consultation process, DEFRA are consulting various organisations, bodies and the general public, who can have their say by submitting their own responses before 14 August 2018 to    [email protected] or by post to Clean Air Strategy consultation, Air Quality and Industrial Emissions Team, Defra, Ground Floor, Seacole Building, 2 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 4DF, or click here for more information.
