The Real Driving Emissions Stage 2 (RDE2) was introduced to capture a ‘real-world’ view of a car’s performance.
The start of the new WLTP emissions testing procedure last year impacted all road users including company car drivers, having implications on company car choice and tax rates. WLTP also introduced the on the road Real Driving Emissions (RDE) test, to provide much more ‘real-world’ figures compared to the normal lab tests and to push for stricter Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emission targets.
Starting from January 2020 all vehicles will have to beat the RDE stage 1 (RDE1) NOx target, with the stricter stage 2 (RDE2) target due in January 2021. This will require all manufacturers to retest their model ranges, potentially leading to further impacts.
The good news
However, there is good news! Diesel vehicles have long been subject to an additional supplement on their Benefit in Kind (BIK) tax, this increased last year to 4% on top of the equivalent petrol model. Thanks to new engine technologies, clean Diesels are now emerging that already beat the RDE2 targets, making them exempt from the additional 4% tax and providing drivers with a perfect solution to their next company car. You can now benefit from Diesel’s higher fuel efficiency and lower Co2 emissions all while saving on your tax bill – so what’s available you may be asking?
