Representatives from Sandicliffe Motor Contracts business development team attended this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show which took place 30 April – 2 May 2019.
The CV Show is is the largest and the most comprehensive road freight transport, distribution, and logistics event staged in Britain and has attracted over 20,000 visitors this year.
In terms of presence, the show has been dominated once again by Ford who held on to the largest display space featuring new innovations and a strategic marketing campaign. It was followed by VW Commercial Vehicles, Groupe PSA (Citroen, Peugeot & Vauxhall) and LDV.
Highlights
LDV’s small EV van
LDV delivered on its commitment for zero emissions development with the addition of a small electric van to its range. The simple but practical, (dare we say it stylish) LDV EV30 was revealed at this year’s CV Show and joins the EV80 in LDV’s lineup to challenge the likes of Renault’s Kango ZE and Nissan’s e-NV200. LDV claims that the EV30 range will reach up to 200 miles on a single charge with the 53kWh motor and 127 with the 35kWh.

Ford ‘Backbone of Britain’
Ford’s impressive display was ever popular this year as it kicked off with their new TV campaign ‘Backbone of Britain‘ which portrayed Ford’s prominence as a ‘military-esque’ superpower, portrayed through symbolic references to the RAF or Royal Navy, check it out below.
Ford Ranger Raptor
The Ford Ranger is currently the best-selling pickup truck in the UK with close to 5,000 newly registered vehicles as of April 2019 according to SMMT.
But with the launch of the Ford Ranger Raptor ‘the super pickup’, a mix of sport, utility and luxury, combined with a brute aggressive look, we expect the Ranger Raptor orders to explode for both business and consumers, when it is expected to go on sale later this year!

Transit Custom PHEV
Ford’s Transit Custom continues to be the UK’s number one van and has held popular accord with UK commercial fleets for half a century. New announcements saw Ford feature its autonomous park assist function which will be available on the new Ford Transit, as well as Fords Transit Custom Plug-in Hybrid which features a 30-mile electric range and a tiny 1.0-litre ecoboost petrol engine to help fleets combat low emission zones in towns and cities.
Ford have also promised to introduce a fully electric Transit to the market by 2021 to challenge Vauxhall’s Vivaro.
New Vivaro
Vauxhall launched its new Vivaro which Vauxhall say is ‘more practical’ than the previous version, offering more choice and clever features such as cruise control, emergency braking, 180-degree camera, Vauxhall connect, traffic sign recognition and heads-up display to name just a few of the new advances that will be available through options.
The Vivaro will be able to carry load lengths of 4m in the L2 version with a load volume of 6.6m3 and a payload of 1400kg, just 100kg short (a 15-stone rugby player) of the Ford Transit Custom’s payload.
LCV are providing growth for UK business
The show delivered a mix of commercial vehicle launches, solutions and future concepts. It also demonstrated many of the manufacturer’s future commitment towards EV commercial vehicles as the UK prepares to pave the ‘Road to Zero‘ – a strategy that is likely to be enforced by the UK government, if it fails to achieve at least 50% of all new vehicles sales as ULEVs (Ultra Low Emission Vehicles) by the year 2030.
Current uptake as identified by SMMT suggests EV sales account for just 2.5% share of new car sales, suggesting the UK has a long way to go to achieve its 50% target in just ten years.
On a positive, SMMT data showed an overall demand for commercial vehicles is on the rise, demonstrating business investment and the importance that commercial vehicles have for the automotive industry. Versus the previous year, YTD, the UK’s CV sales have seen Pickup trucks orders rise by 7.2%, 4x4s are up 24.8% (but their demand is slowing) and 2.0-2.5t vans up by 8.9%*.
