Golfers swing into action to support the first BNI Shrewsbury charity golf day

Events

On 17 November 2016, businesses from up and down the country attended the very first BNI Shrewsbury charity golf day, held at Hawkstone Park Golf Club near Shrewsbury.

Teams of mixed abilities representing various businesses and organisations arrived at 9am for bacon sandwiches and hot drinks inside the clubhouse.

Outside, the sky seemed to be getting darker and darker as the rain was making its way to the course. But this didn’t stop the days play as we geared up for a wet and windy afternoon teeing off from the 10th hole at 11am.

Three holes in and the likelihood of making it around eighteen holes looked small as a curtain of rain raced down from the heavens. As a result, players dived under their umbrellas or ran to trees to find shelter from the storm.

Greens and fairways began to look more like lakes as the heavy rain continued. Any hope of play seemed to have disappeared. However, five minutes later, the clouds vanished and blue sky filled the air.

To our surprise, the wind and rain subsided, and gave way to lovely winter sun, which remained for the rest of the day. This set up for a lovely day of golf, as we made our way around the course.

There was some excellent golf on display as players battled the elements that were left from the mornings weather. Unfortunately for the Sandicliffe Motor Contracts team, we weren’t amongst the highest scorers. The overall winners were The Tudor Griffiths Group who carded a very impressive score of 90

For winning, they gladly received golf prizes, wine, and Sandicliffe umbrellas as they became the first name on the trophy.  So huge congratulations to them.

We got involved in more than just playing though, as we sponsored the ‘Longest Drive’ competition on the 18th hole. Our very own Mark Benson was leading the way, and it looked like he had it in the bag for most of the day. Sadly for Mark, he was out driven by Mike Williams, and could only achieve second place.

Once we had made our way around the course, we then retreated to the clubhouse for refreshments and a two-course meal before the presentation.

The evening then began with an auction and raffle, where teams kindly provided items to be auctioned off.  We offered a Jacque Lemans watch and weekend use of a BMW 6 Series Convertible thanks to Partridge BMW.

The auction and team entry fees helped to raise a generous amount of money that will be donated to two very deserving charities, The Movement Centre (TMC), and West Mercia Search and Rescue.

TMC aim to address movement control issues, which many children with a brain injury or disability face. Our donations will go a long way to help them provide life-changing therapy for children all over the UK. To find out more about their wonderful work, please click here.

West Mercia Search and Rescue provide help to police and fire services locate vulnerable people who go missing in Shropshire, Herefordshire, or Worcestershire. Our donations will help fund their training and life-saving equipment to enable them to do what they do. Please click here for more information on the courageous work that their members carry out.

Overall, we had a fantastic day networking with businesses in a relaxed, friendly environment, and raising money to support two great charities.

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors, organisers, players, and Hawkstone Park Golf Club, who helped make the event a great success. We look forward to supporting the second BNI Shrewsbury Charity Golf Day next year in May 25 2017 at Llanymynech Golf Course
