If you’re looking for a SUV company car, the new Mitsubishi outlander PHEV might be just what you’re after.
The new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a plug in hybrid which combines a traditional internal combustion engine with a state of the art electric motor.
The Outlander has three engine mode of which can be used to power the vehicle:
- Pure EV – powers the wheels solely from the electric motor and can be driven up to a top speed of 74mph with a range of 32 miles on a full charge.
- Series Hybrid – is activated when the batteries need a charge or when a greater rate of acceleration is needed. The engine is used to charge the battery which powers the wheels.
- Parallel Hybrid – the wheels are driven directly from the internal combustion engine. This occurs when the battery is flat or the car is driven above 74mph.
The PHEV will automatically select the appropriate drive mode to maximise efficiency. If drivers are careful they will rarely need to use the Parallel Hybrid mode meaning they will benefit from a more economical drive.
The battery has a range of 23 miles in pure EV mode however this figure will vary depending on how the car is driven. The car comes with a charging cable and can be used on a domestic 13A socket and will take roughly 5 hours to charge whereas dedicated 16A sockets will take only 3.5 hours.
Rapid charge point are available across the UK which will take just 30 minutes however extended use of these charge points may damage the battery. These points can only be used to charge a maximum 80%. Depending on your tariff it can cost between £1 – £1.20 to charge the battery from the mains.
It’s still an SUV.
The Outlander PHEV is quicker 0-62mph than its 2.2 diesel powered brother. The electric motor works together with the engine to deliver 200bhp. It’s twin-motor 4WD system and the Mitsubishi’s proven Super All Wheel Control system allows it to keep going when the going gets rough. It can also wade up to 400mm which is the same as the diesel version. A 1,500kg towing capacity means it can handle most caravans.
The Perks.
